Best Wishes from Seoul

All views and information presented herein are my own and do not represent the views of the Fulbright Program or the U.S. Department of State.

The opportunity that Fulbright has given me to learn about Korea has been an extraordinary experience. It has broadened my world, personally and professionally.

I have spent the last few months immersed in a world where I can make myself understood for the very basic things, yet where I miss out on so much of what is going on because I have not been able to learn the language proficiently. I have experienced so much of what my students and their families go through when they come to the United States. I have also experienced how welcome one can feel despite not speaking the same language or sharing the same culture.

At a time when it is imperative to be reminded that our similarities and differences make us stronger, gaining first hand insight into another culture  is one way to make us globally competent.

The collaboration that resulted from this Fulbright experience has been a meaningful way to share our different perspectives so we can make us and our students more “globally competent.” I have been fortunate to have spent hours with Korean educators discussing how we can make an impact on both sides of the globe – we share the same passion and commitment to teaching and learning.

The people that I have met in this country have taught me new ways of seeing and listening. They have shared their values, their hopes and expectations to make our world  a better place for each of us.

It has been a privilege and an honor to partake in their daily lives, in their classrooms and their homes. It has been exciting to discover new tastes, new places and new perspectives.

As this year closes, I would like to share a few images that  have made this time so memorable. They barely convey the generosity of the Korean people, their sense of tradition and history, their love of nature and their passion for food. But it is a start…

Wishing all of you who have joined me during this exploration a healthy, peaceful and happy 2017 !
